The happy family life of a spirited, successful dancer and his passionate wife is thrown upside down by a shock diagnosis.
Jay Robson, a famous British choreographer, is living the dream. Married to the two loves of his life, his wife and the art of dance, he has the blissful life most of us dream of...until a series of unfortunate events demonstrates the power of illness to impact your life and those around you. “It’s like buying a car. The moment you put your mind on the make and model, everything around you is that exact car. You see it everywhere.”
Faced with the horrors of life and loss, Jay escapes into fantasy, increasingly losing himself in the world of dance. Will he make it out alive? Or will he let go of those he loves in the battle to survive?
White Nights meets Love Story, with a twist of Under The Shadow. A drama comedy, laced with unnerving moments of terror, that will take you on a cinematic ride of a lifetime. A colourful, poignant film, Dolphins In The Sky will touch your heart in unimaginable ways and leave you wondering just how far one man will go for love.
We are often reminded that the best ideas for writing stories are those that originate from our reality, not only because they are genuine and authentic, but also because they deal with universal themes that connect us all.
DOLPHINS IN THE SKY is inspired by real events - my own story. A few months ago while hard at work on another screenplay, I was unexpectedly diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer. That brush with death prompted me to write this script. Our film is not a grim representation or a campaign for this widespread deadly disease, but a socially impactful celebration of life. Important themes are explored and conveyed through the ups and downs of life; moments of laughter and humour will balance the sadness and the struggle for survival.
It is also my vision to create an engaging and entertaining film by juxtaposing family life, love, passion, relationships and the struggle between life and death. And we will weave in contemporary dance elements, choir songs and music, all set against the backdrop of the historical and colourful city of Bath.
When I was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer, I honestly thought I was going to die. It was shattering, because I'd always lived a healthy lifestyle and I considered myself fit and well. The situation was further aggravated when learning about the devastating side-effects of treatments, treatments that could have serious impact on your quality of life, and even render you impotent. For someone of 57, with a lovely wife and three children, and a passion for life, this was a truly soul crushing discovery. My wife and I have kept our relationship healthy throughout our 25-year marriage. But the prostate cancer was threatening to take all that away.
As s filmmaker and writer who has often faced difficult situations in my life, I bounced back, resolving to turn my personal and intimate experience into a film. Not only for the sake of my family, but also to shed light on this deadly disease by turning this dark, depressing situation into a life affirming story.
DOLPHINS IN THE SKY will be purposeful, informative, educational, but more importantly it will take the audience on a unique, inspiring journey of self-discovery. We will raise important questions about the disease that takes one man’s life every hour in the UK. But ultimately, this is a film with plenty of heart, to remind us that, with the love and support of family and friends, we can turn any obstacle, even cancer, into a happy life.
I will shoot DOLPHINS IN THE SKY with 2.35:1 aspect ratio to give it optimum production values and a larger than life, cinematic look suitable for theatrical release. We will start with gentle use of tracking, tripod and drone shots to establish a world of balance and happy family life. This will then make way for a very different shooting style, with lot of handheld shots to dramatise the struggle with cancer. This approach will enable the most effective storytelling, and will enhance our audience’s experience. Sound effects and the soundtrack will also have a key role to play in conveying the story's emotional impact, alongside the visuals.
DOLPHINS IN THE SKY will take you on a rollercoaster ride of an emotional journey where you will laugh, cry and experience a life affirming story. My goal as a director is to make a film with heart that is entertaining, engaging, educational and emotionally touching. A story told with pace and style, where visuals are mixed with sound, music and song. A film that will captivate audiences both in the UK and worldwide.
Dolphins In The Sky opens with a bright colour palette, reflecting the Robsons' happy, harmonious world. This will contrast with the later, darker colours to convey the despair caused by Jay‘s unexpected cancer diagnosis.
MUSIC & SOUND
Original score; solo piano composition and orchestra for the dance scenes. This will be mixed with the choir singing and piano playing both in the rehearsal room as well as at home. I also intend to use some pop music, subject to royalties. The music will be interspersed with sounds of nature, wind, the sea, sirens and city noise.
Trust & Happiness
Career, Dreams & Success
Romance, Staying Young & Struggle
“There is no passion to be found playing small - in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living." Nelson Mandela
Fear, Death & Survival
“You know, once you've stood up to cancer, everything else feels like a pretty easy fight. David H. Koch
“Wherever my story takes me, however dark and difficult the theme, there is always some hope and redemption, not because readers like happy endings, but because I am an optimist at heart. I know the sun will rise in the morning, that there is a light at the end of every tunnel.” Michael Morpurgo
